Five Brave Commandos of 9 Para SF Martyred in Action While Fighting Militants in Rajouri

In a tragic incident, five commandos of the 9 Para Special Forces (SF) unit laid down their lives while engaged in an encounter with militants in the Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir yesterday. The martyred commandos had displayed exemplary courage and valour in their fight against the militants.

The Indian Army said that on specific information about the presence of terrorists in the Kandi Forest in the Rajouri sector, a joint operation was launched on 3 May 2023. The terrorists triggered an explosive device in retaliation, the army said.

At about 7.30 am on 5 May, a search team established contact with a group of terrorists well entrenched in a cave. The area is thickly vegetated with rocky and steep cliffs. During the operation, the militants opened fire on the security forces, leading to a fierce gun battle.

In the ensuing encounter, five commandos of the 9 Para SF unit were martyred while displaying exceptional bravery in the face of danger.

The martyred commandos have been identified as Havaldar Neelam Singh, son of Gurdev Singh, a resident of Jourian in Akhnoor, Jammu district, Naik Arvind Kumar, son of Ujwaal Singh, hailing from Suri Chatialai in Marhoon area of Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, Paratrooper Pramod Negi, son of Devinder Singh Negi of Shillai, Sirmaur in Himachal Pradesh, Lance Naik Ruchin Singh Rawat, son of Rajendra Singh, a resident of Kunigad, Gairsain in Uttarakhand, and Paratrooper Siddhant Chettri, son of Kharka Bahadur, from Pulbazar in Darjeeling district of West Bengal.

Each of these brave soldiers had a family, a life, and a future ahead of them. Their courage, valour and unwavering commitment to protecting their motherland, however, led them to make the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Their selfless devotion to the nation is a shining example of bravery and patriotism, and they will always be remembered as heroes who gave their lives to protect India.

Their families, friends and loved ones are now grappling with the pain of losing their beloved sons, husbands, brothers, and friends. The nation stands with them in this hour of grief, offering its deepest condolences and unflinching support.

Havaldar Neelam Singh, Naik Arvind Kumar, Paratrooper Pramod Negi, Lance Naik Ruchin Singh Rawat, and Paratrooper Siddhant Chettri will forever remain in our hearts and minds. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten, and their memories will continue to inspire generations to come. May their souls rest in peace.
