Mithila University (Lalit Narayan Mithila University) Darbhanga was established in the year 1972. It is a state university located in the Darbhanga district of Bihar.
The university initially functioned from the Mohanpur House at Sara Mohanpur village of the Darbhanga-Sakri route. In 1975, it was shifted to the campus belonging to Raj Darbhanga (Maithil Brahmins Rajpoots dynasty who were the rulers of territories).
