Nepal Marks 16th Republic Day: Celebrating Democracy, Hydropower Collaboration, and Bilateral Economic Deal with India

Kathmandu, May 29, 2023 — The 16th Republic Day of Nepal is being marked with great enthusiasm and patriotic fervor throughout the nation today. This significant day is observed to commemorate the monumental achievement of the Nepali people in their arduous struggle for democracy and the establishment of a republic.

The journey towards a republic began with the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Accord on November 23, 2006. This historic agreement was reached between the seven political parties and the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), effectively bringing an end to the decade-long insurgency that had plagued the nation.

Subsequently, on April 10, 2008, Nepal conducted the Constituent Assembly election, which paved the way for the declaration of a republic on May 28, 2008. This declaration was made during the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly, effectively ending the 240-year reign of the Shah Dynasty monarchy and embracing a republican governance system.

The 16th Republic Day serves as a reminder of the resilience and determination of the Nepali people who fought for democracy, freedom, and the right to self-governance. It is a day to celebrate the progress made over the past one-and-a-half decades and to reflect upon the challenges that lie ahead in building a prosperous and inclusive nation.

In another significant development, Nepal has decided to allow India’s SJVN Limited to develop a second hydropower project in the country. This decision demonstrates the ongoing collaboration and partnership between Nepal and India in the field of renewable energy. The project is expected to contribute to Nepal’s energy sector and further strengthen the bilateral ties between the two neighboring nations.

Additionally, during Prime Minister Prachanda’s upcoming visit to India, it is anticipated that India and Nepal will sign a common payments mechanism deal. This agreement would facilitate smoother and more efficient financial transactions between the two countries, enhancing trade and economic cooperation.

The celebration of the 16th Republic Day serves as a poignant reminder of the progress made by Nepal since the establishment of the republic. It is a time to honor the sacrifices made by the Nepali people in their quest for democracy and to renew their commitment to building a prosperous and harmonious nation.

As the nation observes this momentous day, Nepali citizens from all walks of life come together to rejoice in their shared values, unity, and aspirations for a better future. The 16th Republic Day of Nepal symbolizes the triumph of democracy and the indomitable spirit of the Nepali people in their pursuit of a brighter tomorrow.
