Opposition Leader Accused Modi Government of Authoritarianism and Shift to Despotism

New Delhi: Ten opposition leaders, including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, have written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing their concern over the recent arrest of former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia.

Sisodia was arrested in connection with the Excise Policy case on February 26 evening, and the opposition leaders have claimed that his arrest is a clear indication of the government’s authoritarian approach towards dissenting voices.

The letter, signed by Kejriwal and leaders of the Trinamool Congress, the Nationalist Congress Party, the Samajwadi Party, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the Rashtriya Janata Dal, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Communist Party of India, the Indian Union Muslim League, and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, expressed their “deep concern” over the “unjust and arbitrary” arrest of Sisodia.

The opposition leaders have also accused the Modi government of using state agencies to target political opponents and curtail their democratic rights. They have claimed that such actions are a clear sign of the country’s shift towards a “despotic” form of governance.

The letter states, “The arrest of Mr. Sisodia, who is a well-known political leader and a respected public figure, is deeply troubling and raises serious questions about the government’s commitment to the rule of law and democratic values. We strongly condemn this action and demand that Mr. Sisodia be released immediately.”

The opposition leaders have also demanded that the government ensures that all political leaders are treated fairly and that their democratic rights are protected.

The letter concludes with a warning that such actions will not go unnoticed and that the opposition will continue to raise its voice against any attempt to undermine democracy.

The arrest of Sisodia has triggered a wave of protests across the country, with many opposition leaders alleging that the government is using state machinery to silence dissenting voices.

The matter has now become a political flashpoint, with the opposition and the government trading charges against each other.
