According to sources, the UP STF had received information about the whereabouts of Asad Ahmed and Ghulam, who were on the run since the murder of Umesh Pal. The STF team had laid a trap and challenged the duo, who were traveling in a car, to surrender. However, they opened fire at the STF team, which retaliated, resulting in the killing of both Asad and Ghulam.

The news of the encounter sent shockwaves across the state, and the government machinery swung into action.
