Patna – At approximately 6:30 AM IST today, a powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Tibet, near the border with Nepal, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The tremors were strongly felt across Nepal and parts of Bihar, sending panic among residents in the region.
The earthquake’s epicenter was reported near Tibet, near Nepal’s northern border, with a depth of around 10 kilometers. Two distinct shakes were felt quickly, causing people to rush out of their homes in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and other parts of Nepal. Similar scenes of panic were observed in Patna, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Madhubani, and nearby areas of Bihar.
Initial reports from Nepal indicate minor structural damages to buildings in Kathmandu, with no confirmed casualties so far. Authorities in Bihar have stated that they are monitoring the situation and have urged people to stay calm.
Emergency services in both Nepal and India are on high alert, and disaster management teams have been activated. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) closely monitors aftershocks and assesses potential threats.
The governments of Nepal and India have issued advisories urging people to avoid damaged buildings and remain outdoors if possible. Schools in affected areas have been closed as a precautionary measure.
