Lakshmipur, Uttar Dinajpur – In a shocking incident from Lakshmipur gram panchayat, Uttar Dinajpur, a woman faced severe repercussions after eloping with her lover shortly after her marriage.
The woman, who had recently returned to her village, was ordered by the local panchayat to pay Rs 10,000 as compensation to her husband. Failing to deposit the amount, she and her lover faced a brutal assault.
The accused, identified as Tajammul alias JCB, was arrested after the police took suo motu cognizance of a viral video capturing the attack. Tajammul is known to be a close aide of local MLA Hamidul Rahman, raising serious questions about political protection and local governance.
The incident took place in the Lakshmipur gram panchayat of Uttar Dinajpur. The viral video showed the couple being mercilessly beaten, sparking widespread outrage and condemnation from various quarters.
Opposition parties, including the BJP, Congress, and CPI(M), have strongly condemned the act, labeling it as “Talibani” and undemocratic. They have demanded strict action against the perpetrators and called for an investigation into the role of political figures in the incident.
“This is an appalling act of barbarity. Such medieval practices have no place in a democratic society,” said a BJP spokesperson. “We demand justice for the victims and immediate action against those responsible, including any political figures who may have abetted this crime.”
The Congress echoed similar sentiments, with a party leader stating, “The rule of law must prevail. No one should be above the law, and this incident is a blot on our society’s conscience.”
CPI(M) leaders also joined the chorus of condemnation, emphasizing the need for stringent measures to ensure such incidents do not recur. “This is a clear violation of human rights and a reflection of the deteriorating law and order situation in the region,” a CPI(M) representative stated.
The police have assured a thorough investigation and have promised to bring all culprits to justice. Meanwhile, the victim and her lover are receiving medical treatment and support.
This incident underscores the urgent need for reforms in local governance and the enforcement of the rule of law to protect the rights and dignity of individuals, especially women, in rural India.
