Delhi Police Raid Homes of NewsClick Journalists Amid UAPA Case: Abhisar Sharma, Aunindyo Chakraborty, and Others Targeted

In a startling development, the Delhi Police Special Cell is currently conducting simultaneous raids at approximately 35 locations across the city. These raids include the homes of seven prominent journalists and locations associated with the digital news portal, Newsclick.

In a significant escalation of events, a fresh case has been registered by the Delhi Police Special Cell against Newsclick under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

This marks a significant development in the ongoing scrutiny of the media organization, which has also come under the radar of the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Delhi Police and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Allegations have emerged suggesting that Newsclick received funds from external sources, particularly from China. Authorities claim that these funds were acquired through illegal means, and pertinent documents supporting the transactions were not provided to the investigative agencies.

The developments have caused widespread concern and consternation among civil rights activists, journalists’ associations, and the broader public. The actions undertaken by the Delhi Police have raised questions about the freedom of the press and the principles of democracy that underpin it.

During the raids, the Delhi Police seized electronic devices, including laptops and mobile phones, from the journalists’ homes. It has been reported that some of the journalists were taken to the police station for further questioning. Notably, one of the journalists, Abhisar Sharma, took to social media and posted, “Delhi police landed at my home. Taking away my laptop and phone…”

As of now, no arrests have been made, but the police have indicated that they might detain individuals based on the ongoing investigation. The raids are closely linked to the ED’s investigation into the alleged financial irregularities involving Newsclick.

This unfolding situation has garnered attention not only within the journalistic community but also among political leaders and parties. Calls for transparency and accountability have been voiced from various quarters, emphasizing the fundamental importance of safeguarding the freedom of the press and freedom of speech in a democratic society.

The Delhi Police’s actions and the subsequent investigation will continue to be closely monitored, and further updates will be provided as new information comes to light.

This is a developing story, and we will provide updates as more information becomes available. For more information, stay tuned to our news portal and follow us on social media.
