President Murmu Honors Achievers: Presents National Awards for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities 2023

New Delhi: On the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, presented the National Awards for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities for 2023 today.

Addressing the gathering, President Murmu praised the significance of these awards as a commendable initiative for empowering individuals with disabilities. She highlighted the importance of recognizing individual and institutional efforts, stating that such acknowledgment encourages everyone involved. Emphasizing the responsibility of achievers among persons with disabilities, she urged them to assist others to the best of their abilities.

President Murmu underlined the global importance of empowering persons with disabilities, noting that approximately 15 percent of the world’s population faces such challenges. Expressing satisfaction with the positive change in societal attitudes towards persons with disabilities in recent years, she expressed confidence that, with proper facilities and opportunities, everyone in this community could lead a life of equality and dignity.

Proudly mentioning the accessibility of every part of the new Parliament building to persons with disabilities, President Murmu called upon society to learn from this example and prioritize the needs of persons with disabilities from the outset. Stressing the importance of innovation over renovation, she encouraged a proactive approach to building inclusive spaces.

Turning her attention to broader development goals, President Murmu pointed out that achieving Sustainable Development Goals related to poverty alleviation, health, education, gender equality, sanitation, and drinking water significantly contributes to empowering persons with disabilities. She expressed satisfaction that India has accorded high priority to these goals and is steadily progressing towards their fulfillment.

Applauding India’s outstanding performance at the Asian Para Games, the President acknowledged the historic achievements of athletes driven by an indomitable spirit. She praised the continuous progress of all players and highlighted the inspirational roles played by athletes like Dr. Deepa Malik and Ms. Avani Lekhara in shaping this success story.
