New Delhi – In a significant step towards tackling air pollution and promoting cleaner alternatives, India’s Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has hinted at the possibility of imposing an additional 10% tax on diesel engine vehicles. Addressing the pressing issue of diesel engine vehicles’ impact on air quality, Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasized the government’s commitment to curbing pollution. He stated, “Say goodbye to diesel soon, else we will increase the tax burden to such an extent that it will become increasingly difficult to sell these vehicles.”
Union Transport Minister Gadkari has also proposed the imposition of a 10% additional Goods and Services Tax (GST) on diesel vehicles, further incentivizing the shift toward cleaner energy alternatives. However, he clarified,
There is an urgent need to clarify media reports suggesting an additional 10% GST on the sale of diesel vehicles. It is essential to clarify that there is no such proposal currently under active consideration by the government.
